personal response: I love this picture, and the set that comes with it. The picture has such a sense of movement, and the movement has no limits or boundaries, it is just so free. And the color is such a soft pallet, the picture as a whole isn't in your face or loud. Most photography is now high fashion and so bright and abstract, but this is a beautiful, delicate picture with soft, wispy elements and lines. The whole aspect is very dream like. The way the photographer has captured the movement without really making it look so frozen and posed the way that most pictures are really stands out to me. Dance itself is a great way to tell a story, or a way to get your feelings out, and I believe that the photographer really thought about that when he was planning this photo shoot, because you can tell that the model and photographer are very passionate about this set. The model on the left is strong and confident, set in her position and her way in life. The model in the middle is very poised and graceful, a perfect balance of the models on either side of her. Finally the model on the right is very free and open with limitations. Together they are very complementing and fit well together to make the whole photo. When I look at this photo I feel relaxed and calmed, and I really think that a picture can be judged on the emotional response that it gets from the audience. The photographer should be very proud of this photo. He captured a difficult subject on movement and grace, and adding a whimsical quality all wrapped up.

Oct 27 & 28 Blog Entry #8
For your blog assignment, you must choose 4 mythological characters that are referenced in the play and for each one provide some information regarding the meaning of the reference and the significance and history of the character. You must write 50-100 words on each character you choose, so you may have to do some additional research.
Cupid- He is the son of Venus, and the god of love. He is known as a young man that loves jokes and shooting people with his arrows that are either gold tipped or lead tipped. When shot with the gold end, the person that has been shot falls madly in love with the next person he/she sees. On the other hand, the lead tip of the arrow will cause aversion. Cupid sometimes has a blindfold over his eyes to signify that love is blind.
Neptune- In Roman mythology, Neptune is the god of the sea. In Greek mythology, Poseidon is very close to Neptune, but they are not identical. Neptune was also sometimes praised for the god of horses. The planet Neptune is named after the Roman god, because of the planets' blue coloring. Neptune is the god of salt and fresh water seas.
Aurora- Aurora is the Roman goddess of the dawn. Every morning, she is said to fly across the sky to signal that the sun is coming. She is brother of the Sun god, Sol, and sister of the moon god, Luna. The four winds are her children. Apparently she fell in love with a mortal man, Tithonus. Wanting to be with him forever, she asked Zeus to make him immortal. Unfortunately, she did not ask Zeus to grant him enternal youth, and when Tithonus was for an old man, she turned him into a grasshopper.
Fates- The Fates are three women, Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos. They are the daughters of Zeus and Themis. The three sisters are in chatrge of the lives of the mortals. Clotho spins the thread of life, Lachesis determines how long the thread will be, that is, how long the person will live, and the last sister, Atropos, cuts the string, ending the life of whoever the string belonged to. They are described to be three old, unfeeling hags

October 20 & 21 Blog Entry #7
William Shakespeare’s influence on the English language is tremendous. It is estimated that he is responsible for coining hundreds of new words and phrases that have survived the test of time and remain a part of our speech today. Although it can not be said with absolute certainty whether or not Shakespeare invented these words and phrases himself, there is a long list of words that appear for the first time in his plays. You might be surprised to discover that some of the phrases and words that you hear everyday were first written 400 years ago by William Shakespeare.
Your task is to research words and phrases that Shakespeare has been attributed with inventing. Choose 10 words or phrases that were introduced by Shakespeare that you use or have heard used. Give a definition of each word or phrase and tell me which of Shakespeare’s plays each one of your selections comes from.

Your assignment for today’s blog entry is to explore London’s Globe Theatre. Take the virtual tours and allow yourself to imagine the theatre experience during Shakespeare’s time. Write a short blog entry (minimum of 250 words), describing your impression of the theatre. Do you think you would enjoy seeing a play at the Globe? Where would you like to sit? Why? What is the most interesting thing you have learned about the Globe?

The Globe theatre, to me, seemed like something that the rich and poor could enjoy together, but with big differences in the way they got to enjoy the play. I always knew there was a big difference in class back then, but I never knew that it effected them that much. I only think that I would enjoy a play at the Globe Theatre if I got to sit with the higher class, in the gallery. The smell wouldn't be as bad, I would not have to worry about the people trying to steal from me, and I would be safe from the weather. Or maybe I would try and pay the extra penny and sit in the Lords Room because then it would be more private and truly away from all the rowdiness. I think I was most interested by the way the crowd could react. If you ever talked during a play now, you would get some very evil looks from the people sitting around you. Back then, you could boo and throw food and heckle the actors until they did something right or changed the play they were performing. I had no idea that someone could heckle the actor until they started to perform the play that the heckler wanted to see. All in all, I would really rather watch a play in this day and age then back then because it just seems like it would be a much more comfortable experience. The scenery and costumes are much improved, and they actually have women playing the parts of women.

Oct 6th & 7th Blog Entry #5
Reflect on your experience with the novel October Sky. How effective do you think the activities and schedule were for this unit? How does it compare with other novel studies you have done? Do you think you gained more from this type of study? Why or why not?
October Sky has been a different sort of novel study for me. We didn't really have assigned chapters to read to, it was just a matter of keeping up with the journal entries. In other classes I find we do more group reading and class reading, I prefer independent reading, its easier to focus. I liked that Fridays were a silent reading day, and that we were given the choice to read 'October Sky' or something we have brought from home, because if you were behind in reading, and had no chance to read at home, you get 70 minutes of quiet reading time to catch up. I think that this was effective because only the kids that really care will do them on time without being constantly reminded, because everyone just thinks, well, I have a month, I won't do them now. And before you know it, they are due tomorrow. It is different type of novel study then I am used to because usually I have been given one assignment at a time and the due date will be in a couple of days. This semester we had many assignments to do in a long period of time. I think I have gained more from this type of study just because it made me keep track of how long I had and how much I had done.

What is important about friendship? Discuss how important friendship is in terms of the novel and your own life.
Friendship is important because it means you have someone to lean on and count on when times are hard. You will always have someone there for you when you have friends. When you have great friends, it is like you have other people that are like your other half. They know everything about you, and you know them like the back of your hand. In October Sky friendship is a key element because without the friends Sonny has, he wouldn't really have the support he needs to build his rockets. Each of his friends bring something different to the group. His oldest friends are always there for the hardships Sonny faces, like Daisy Mae's death. Roy Lee did what he told Sonny he would and found out who killed her. He even gave Sonny the choice whether he wanted to know to did it or not, because Roy Lee know that it wasn't worth hating whoever did it is that person was sorry. In Quentin's case, he didn't really have friends before the BCMA, but when he joined he gained five new friends, and the probably meant a lot to him. Sherman's friendship meant having a group of people that looked past his diablities, and just saw him as a friend that could keep up with whatever they are doing. O'Dell friendship with the group was strengthened through the BCMA, and they all made a new friend in Billy. A guy who should an interest in the club, but became good friends with all of them. In my own life, friendship is very important, because I know that I will always have someone to count on no matter where I go. These are people that I have known for as long as I could remember, and can really trust. We have always been a tight group of friends, and I really think we can stay that way for a long time.

Chapter Review And Essay Question
Question: Why wouldn't Homer want Elsie to know about Geneva Eggers even though she helped Sonny?
Answer: Homer doesn't want Elsie to learn about his son's encounter with Miss Eggers because, first of all, she is a woman with a repuation, and wouldn't be to happy to learn that Homer and Geneva have a history, even if it was just that he saved her. Geneva also sells moonshine, which parents generally don't approve of. I also think because he was the one that saved her from the burning house when she was little, but didn't see the rest of her family, he owes Miss Eggers something, because he could have saved her family but didn't. He was really unhappy with himself for not saving the others, and I don't think he wants people to really know that he let a big family die.

End Of Semester One
In English 10-1, after a lot of hard work, we have all finally reached our goal and finished the year with a better understanding of basic abilities.
Through our many novel studies we have learned how to read a book and take the most out of it. October Sky was a great starting novel and helped me understand character traits and plot structures. Throughout the year I learned how to take what I have read and respond with more creativity, personality, and showing my comprehension of my understanding. I can also understand oral, and visual works better with what I have learned in the past four months.
My ideas and the information I find are more organized and much more to the point without the useless information that really doesn't contribute to the basic ideas. With this I find I can go back and read over my notes and understand what I have written, and that helps when I need to study for a test.
When we have to do final projects and poster for the class my projects are much more clear and creative. I can communicate my ideas across to others with more ease and without the confusion of information that really isn't needed. They look much more creative, which helps with the organization of my project.
When I have to work with others I don't panic as much because I can work much better without the worries of incorporating every ones ideas and impute. Everyone in the group gets their ideas heard and understood before we judge.
In this class I hope to get a 85% because I feel that English is a class that I enjoy and understand. To achieve this mark I plan to work my hardest, ask questions when needed (something I generally didn't do in the past), review my information frequently so that I won't forget and then won't have to panic and cram the night before a test, which has been a problem for me.
First semester English had a slow start after a few schedule changes and starting English with a new class and teacher, but after we got settled in it started going smoothly. I learned a lot, reviewed old basics, and learned new fundamentals. Some was hard, and other assignments came easily. Overall, it was a good four months with much accomplished

Discuss how you think you will do with the assignments and reading of this novel. Discuss any strategies you have for getting more out of the novel and how you can help yourself get motivated to complete all your assignments. This entry should again be about 400 words.
We have just started reading October Sky, and it seems like a good book so far. I think I will do alright with all the reading and assignments. The only problem I might have is staying on top of the blogs. The reading I think I will be fine with, because I have always been one to read ahead.
Generally I can read between the lines of a story and pick up at what the author is getting at, I might take a while, but I can usually get it. The assignments will hopefully be well done and easy to understand, because I might have a hard time getting my thoughts onto paper.
To get more out of the novel, I plan to really think about all the Journal Response questions while I am reading the book so I can think ahead about what I will need to understand. I could also try to relate to the characters more, so they seem more real to me. If you can relate to a character, I usually find that you become more interested in the story, and what will happen to that character next. If they are just boring people in a story you really can't seem to care about, you just find that you don't want to read the story.
To motivate myself to complete all upcoming assignments, I will keep myself guessing about upcoming Journal Entries and what they mean, that will help me keep reading, in order to see if I was right. That will also give me a better understanding of what I will need to answer the questions. Other ways to possibly motivate myself to complete my assignments would be thinking of the good grade I could get if I try my best on all of the assignments. If you really don't care about your grades, you won't really want to do well on any of the work you have to do, but if grades are important to you, you will most likely strive to do the best you can.
